Bell’s Palsy or facial paralysis is curable in Ayurveda — A Case Study
This is a case study of an 81-year-old person suffering from Bell’s Palsy or facial paralysis who was cured with Marma Chikitsa & Nadi Chikitsa within a month from the date he had his symptom with us.
The occurrence of Bell’s Palsy
On 26th February 2021, this 81-year-old man woke up with restricted facial muscle movement. The right side of his face had lost its movement. The right side of his face had dropped down. His eyes were watering uncontrollably. Additionally, he was unable to rinse his mouth comfortably, because he was unable to hold water in his mouth. The muscles of the right cheek and lips had altogether lost their strength completely.
He lives with his son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren. His son called me so that his father could be examined. After performing his Nadi Pariksha and his physical examination and evaluation, I concluded that he had severe emotional as well as mental stress which led to his condition called Bell’s Palsy.
Before Therapy and Treatment: —
Additional Symptoms
In addition to his condition of Bell’s Palsy, he also had additional symptoms of high blood pressure as well as type II diabetes for which he was taking allopathic medication.
Planning The Treatment
His treatment to cure Bell’s palsy was carefully planned. Medicated Ayurvedic oils as Nasya (nasal drops) and medicated ayurvedic oils were planned for a head massage. Since the weather was warm and close to summer, this period was considered perfect for both these treatments. Thereafter, Marma Chikitsa was planned as the main therapy to treat his symptom of temporary facial paralysis.
Treating Bell’s Palsy
As the treatment began, the aged man was pessimistic. He narrated to me additional symptoms that the right side of his head ached when he woke up in the middle of the night to urinate. This was concerning because, if the symptom progressed, it could lead to a paralytic stroke.
We proceeded with the treatment with regularity. While his son administered the nasal drops and did the head massage, we performed Marma Chikitsa on him.
On the 20th day of treatment
Encouraging results
The results were encouraging. After about 15 days, the 81-year-old man mentioned that his headache was reducing. Also, we noticed that his facial muscles were responding to the treatment. He himself felt a reduction in the numbness. His symptom of temporary facial paralysis was easing its way out, it seemed.
We reviewed his condition on 18th March 2021, which is the 20th day of treatment. His face looks or appears to be near normal. His condition has much improved. The headache is negligible. He also noticed that his eyes which were watering have much improved. His mouth, with which he could not hold water, nor rinse, was now able to do both.
His speech seemed to have suffered a bit due to Bell’s Palsy. Even that symptom had gone.
Consent
The necessary consent forms were signed by the client so that we could publish this case study.
Conclusion
We provided appropriate and necessary treatments. In less than a month, he has achieved a near-complete recovery. Looking at the way his treatment is progressing, it seems that, he will be in good health within another 15–30 days of treatment.
